Navigating As We Age: Frequently Asked Questions

What are the objectives of the Navigating course?

The course is designed to promote peace of mind through the presentation of information and activities to guide residents through legal, financial, and health choices. It also offers a deeper understanding of Riderwood’s rich array of supportive services. A hopedfor result of the course is completion of the Life Ledger, a document designed to record vital information and wishes in a form that can be shared with family members or trusted supporters

Who should take the course?

The many dozens of Riderwood residents who have taken the Navigating course over the last five years would say – take the course now! The lessons benefit anyone who’s concerned that their legal documents are inadequate, that their health or their spouse’s is declining, that they may not have enough financial resources to support them in coming years, or that they ought to be facing end-of-life issues. Navigating alumni are so relieved that they’ve had help from area experts, Riderwood professional staff, and fellow residents to get their affairs in order and to communicate their choices to their families or other advisers.

What are the requirements for taking the course?

  • Commitment to attend all classes and make the effort to complete the assigned homework
  • Ability to actively engage in class activities
  • Payment of the $50 fee to cover the costs associated with the students’ binders: 400 pages of text, slides, pertinent articles, and suggested resource material
  • Comfort with, and access to, a computer. An optional pre-session tutorial will help you manage the tables in the Life Ledger

Homework assignments include watching videos, reading supplementary materials that reinforce information, and entering data into the Life Ledger. Expect to spend two to three hours per week to complete homework.

When and how can I register for Navigating As We Age?

Registration will begin at 9 am on February 23 and remain open for several days. The registration link is on the Caring Connection website. You can complete the brief form beforehand to be ready to hit “Submit” promptly at 9 a.m on February 23.

Due to room limitations, registration will be limited – first-come, first-served. Those on the waiting list may be offered an opportunity to participate if there is an opening before the third class.

Space limitations may require that spouses decide which of them will be the primary registrant. Each spouse can switch with the other, though, to attend particular classes of interest and share their notes. Be aware that this class fills quickly, so register promptly.

Someone from the Caring Connections Committee will call everyone who registered to advise on admission status and to answer any questions or concerns about the course.
