First Things First
-
- Get to know the key Riderwood staff members in your Clubhouse: your Resident Services representative, your Community Resources Coordinator, your Facilities Coordinator and the Front Desk team. Introduce yourself and get their names and contact information. If needed ask your Front Desk staff member for the names and contact information for key staff members.
- Sign into MyErickson (see “Resources” below). Edit and save your profile. Include your hobbies and interests. This makes it easier for new acquaintances to find you.
- Be sure to wear your name tag. It’s hard for any of us to make new friends when we can’t remember their names! And keep that blue “New Resident” ribbon on for a while. It really does get noticed.
- Save the phone number for Security in your mobile phone.

History
We had downsized, packed and moved to Riderwood – while wearing masks and staying 6 feet apart.
We received our keys and walked down empty halls to our apartments. Riderwood was doing an amazing job of caring for us during the shutdown. We received meal deliveries to our door. Great Courses programs, exercise classes (and more) were available on TV. But we were unable to meet our new neighbors.
Then Jim and Jo Paoletti moved to Riderwood. They quickly focused on remedying this isolation. Jo instituted Zoom meetings for Meet and Greets, as well as weekly programs with presentations by Riderwood staff to replicate the information previously shared at New Resident Orientations.
When Jo was asked what the name of this new Zoom group was, she paused for a moment, shrugged and said ,”Now What?”
Jo organized and facilitated, Catherine Brousseau sent “New Neighbors Moving In” emails and Leah Solat maintained the database and invited new residents to join the group. As Riderwood began to slowly open up again, there were both Zoom and in-person Now What? gatherings.
Eventually, as Jo, Catherine and Leah became involved with other committees, classes and groups on campus, they asked themselves “Now What?” and decided to step aside from leadership of the group to pursue their other passions.
It took 5 people to pick up the work the original 3!
